I don't need to explain that here. However, there is at least one major downside I see to this new revolution. While it's great that every person now has the power to publish and broadcast, hopefully they don't all start acting like reporters.

To illustrate my concern, look at these photos submitted by a citizen CNN reporter through its IReport service following an avalanche that buried cars in Colorado. While the footage is interesting, wouldn't it be better if the person taking the photos were helping out instead of snapping pictures?

While this argument may sound absurd, let me give another example. I once wrote for the student newspaper at the university I attended. One night I got a call about a water main that had broken and was flooding a house. I took my camera and my notebook to follow the story. When I got there, the family was desperately trying to remove their personal items from their basement before it completely flooded. They needed all the help they could get. I set my camera and notebook aside and waded into the water to help them, as did most everyone else on the scene, except for two photographers/reporters from local newspapers. They were busy just snapping pictures, and when they were finished with that, they left.

My concern is that people will become so focused on getting great footage or photos that they will allow others to be injured or their personal property harmed as they simply stand by and watch, while the cameras are rolling.

Let's keep Web 2.0 rolling and keep the information coming, but also don't think great footage is more valuable than helping out those in need.

Driving into Manhattan (2003)

Take Advantage of Your "First" Life

I've recently read a few articles and listened to podcasts regarding a Website called Second Life, which is basically a virtual world where you can direct the life of a virtual person, or avatar. The virtual world is so complex that it even has a monetary system where U.S. Dollars can be exchanged for a virtual currency and visa versa.

Some people are reportedly making enough money by setting up virtual businesses in Second Life to quit their real jobs. But most people are attracted to the site because it provides a form of escapism and a life some say is better than their real life. That is unsettling.

It's unclear what these virtual worlds will become, but people should realize that the things they do virtually have an affect on themselves in real life. Perhaps this will evolve into something good, but I think there's too much good to be done in the world to spend your time living a second life and trying to "virtually" gratify yourself.

Stop Recording and Start Helping

We live in a fascinating time when almost everyone has a video camera of one sort or another. Now everyone can have their own T.V. show, what once took a huge investment to begin and run can now be done relatively cheaply and very well. Even individuals can quickly make their videos available to the entire world through YouTube. Even CNN now offers a service where anyone can upload a video.

While this explosion in information is great in many ways, we amatuers must be careful not to adopt the MSM habit of standing by recording, when we should be helping. Let me explain. The other day I saw a news story about a major highway buckling because of the heat. The cameraman filmed as car after car hit the buckling portion of the road, some almost losing control. I had to wonder why the cameraman didn't do something to warn the drivers instead of just standing there filming.

Just last year a group of hikers in New Jersey filmed a bear attacking a sleeping camper for a full 30 seconds before coming to his aid.

While I think it's great that blogs, video and other media are beginning to keep media honest, let's hope that those who report on their own blog don't adopt the same kind of omissive behavior the media does when covering stories.

Freely Sharing Knowledge

One of the fascinating developments with consumer-generated media is the willingness its creators have to freely share their knowledge without any expectation of compensation. It's unclear if this trend with last or if it's just the thrill of having your own instant, free printing press that's driving it.

The bottom line is that there is a wealth of information out there on every subject. You can educate yourself and become an expert if you'll just take advantage of it. The difficulty is knowing where to find the best information, but with some experience, that becomes clearer and you learn to find the best stuff. Our opportunity to learn has been greatly expanded.

Pres. Bush in Chicago With Its Press

I'm watching a press conference with Pres. Bush, who is speaking to the local (and national) press in Chicago. He introduced the press conference by saying he wanted to see what a press conference outside Washington would be like and he said, "it would do the White House press corps some good." That statement was likely intended to send a message to the White House press corps that they no longer have the relevance they've had in the past. With modern communication technolgy, reporters in other cities can cover a press conference just as effectively as the Washington press. They also have the advantage of being more tied into the people of America and understand what issues are on their minds, unlike the White House press corps who over-politicize everything. I like the move.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yeoldswimminghole.blogspot.com/2006/07/pres-bush-in-chicago-with-its-press.html' title='Pres. (The picture to the left is from an official Ford Web site. Notice how the text glorifies crime) It's too bad that an American institution like Ford would promote anti-social behavior that destroys neighborhoods and leads to worse crimes.

Ford encourages people to "express themselves," a common phrase used by taggers to justify their crime. There are plenty of ways for people to "express themselves" without dirtying neighborhoods with graffiti. Or is he? This statement, joke or not, epitomizes the dangerous attitude some Americans have today about the state of our country. We do have difficulties to work through, but to make statements like this shows gross ingratitude for the wonderful country we live in and the blessed lives we live.

What's most disturbing is that this attitude discounts all the blood, sweat and tears our forebears put into making this country what it is today. We have oil problems now, so cry me a river. Would we trade our situation for that of any other country?

Again, people tell jokes, but let's not let them change our attitude and affect our gratitude for this great land God has blessed us with. Evidently Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has no clue how to shoot a gun. A video discovered shows him fumbling with a machine gun that he obviously does not know how to shoot. Anyone with experience with firearms can clearly see he has know idea what he is doing and is uncomfortable with the gun he's shooting.

What is interesting here is that this even more puts these terrorist videos into the category of staged, fake news, which the mainstream media and journalism societies purport to disdain so much. Hopefully they will think twice next time before given a terrorist a forum to spread his statements unconstested to a huge audience.

Another Terrorist Video News Release

It's been just a few days since I wrote about the media running with terrorist video news releases and today, they're running with another one.

Look closely at this CNN story. Many people are saying it's just too early to see that horrible day depicted on the big screen or any screen. The film has lots of support from many of the families of the brave people who died on that flight, but others strongly object.

I don't plan to see the movie, but I don't think it's "too early" to show it. When would it not be too early? The fact is it's difficult to see how much harm to individuals and our country a few bad people can inflict.

I recently watched a History Channel special on the conspiracy theories surrounding the murder of JFK. The documentary concluded there was no conspiracy and explained how people latch on to conspiracy theories when the truth is just to simple and painful to except. I think a similar thing is happening here. It's difficult to realize just how vulnerable we really are, but we do need to remind ourselves of that to prepare for and hopefully mitigate future attacks in the future.

It's also important to recognize and honor the brave men and women who died on that plan to save others and to protect our country from further harm.

Nuclear Waste "No Way Day"

The folks in Utah are facing an impending decision by the BLM that will determine whether nuclear waste is stored just a stone's throw away from beautiful and vibrant Salt Lake City. During the past couple of months, there's been discussion about the ethics behind running VNRs. The journalism profession looks down on media outlets that run with press releases and VNRs without showing the other side. Being skeptical is probably a good thing for the news media, but they need to be consistent.

I bring this up because this week the media has run with two audio news releases extensively without even questioning the ethics or harm to America in doing it. First it was Osama bin Ladin's latest audio news release and then that rat in Iraq issued his latest video news release. Isn't it interesting that when our government or reputable organizations provide information to the press it is sliced, diced, discredited and we're left with skimpy sound bites. But if a terrorist wants to deliver a message to the world, the media runs with it like a flock of sheep.

If the media really wants to protect society, as it claims to do, it should be wiser about whom it makes famous and whom it gives a megaphone to the world to. The message so for is, if you do terrible things, that will give you the prominence that will make you worthy for us to take your message to the world.

Natural Disasters

This past week marked the 100th anniversary of the great San Francisco quake, which killed thousands. They interviewed a polar bear expert who said bears are skinnier than he has ever seen them and they are drowning. He said he's never seen polar bears drown before.

The reason why they are drowning is because they are trying to swim extremely long distances while searching for food. They're having trouble finding food because the seals they feed on are also changing their migration and living habits.

If the majority of scientist are correct, there's no question the world climate is changing and changing very rapidly. It's very interesting how this once quiet group is suddenly at the forefront of things.

I personally believe immigrants are crucial to our society, yet also believe they need to do things legally. I hope both objectives can be met and we can live together in peace and without prejudice.

Tonight as I was walking home from work, I passed a hispanic family who apparently were on their way to a demonstration. Wanting to be friendly, I smiled and said "hi." The father responded by yelling at the top of his lungs, "Si se puede!" (yes we can!), which has become the slogan for the demonstration. It was a rude response to my attempt to extend a hand of friendship. I hope and don't think that represents the attitude of most immigrants. We all need to lose our sense of entitlement and replace it with understanding.

How We Undermine Our Creator

Debates about religion and evolution are raging and will surely continue to do so for the forseeable future. This week scientists discovered a fossil they claim is the missing link that explains how life moved from the sea to land. While the discovery is no doubt interesting it is just one piece of the puzzle of the history of the world.

The debate is not just one of physical scientific evidence, but also spiritual evidence as we saw in the debate last week over the recent study out on prayer.

Because I love to look at and ponder the heavens, this week I bought a book called "What's Out There." I'm still waiting for it, but the reviews suggest its images and text are amazing. One of the reviews in the book grabbed my attention and highlighted how differently those who believe in God view the world compared to those who do not:

This close-up look at the workings of the cosmos makes me feel almost euphoric. No offense to religionists, but there's wonder enough in these purely physical phenomena--no creator required. What's Out There does a magnificent job of capturing that wonder in both picture and word. (Fred DuBose)
Mr. DuBose was sensitive enough pardon if he gave any offense, which he did not, but I marvel at his perspective. For me, pondering what is in the universe, with all its magesty and wonder, does not negate the need for a creator, but in fact necessitates the need for a creator.

I believe this debate will never end, until the end. There is room for people who see things both ways, but we will all eventually know there is a Creator and our future is grand.

Scientist Sign Seekers

News reports were buzzing yesterday about a new study that claims praying for those who undergo surgery does not help them and in fact could hurt them. Here are just a few of the news reports: London Times, Washington Post, New York Times. Of course bloggers are talking about it as well.

I first saw this story on the CBS Early Show and nearly choked on my breakfast when the "expert" analyst, Emily Senay, they interviewed said, "Of course, this is not the last word on prayer." Really!? Thanks for the reassurance.

Those who strive to know God and understand the true purpose of prayer know this is all very ridiculous because it violates and principle taught again and again in the scriptures: don't seek for signs. This is nothing more than sign seeking.

Let's look at the intent of those responsible for the prayers and I'm not talking about those who actually prayed, I'm talking about the researchers. Their intent was not to help the people undergoing surgery, their intent was to test God. Their methods we're equally suspect. They told the congregants the exact words to say and those who prayed had no idea who they were praying for and they knew they would never know if those they prayed for were healed. So basically it took no faith to pray because they knew they would be ignorant as to whether those prayers were effectively.

Let's go back to the point about the scientists telling the congregants exactly what to say. Let's look at it from God's perspective. He hears these prayers, which are all the same (vain repetitions), and He knows the only reason these people are praying is to help scientists try to prove or disprove His power. Do you really think God will submit to a sign-seeking scientist's wishes?

The bottom line is that God cannot be proved or disproved through science. Those who pray know it works and understand the major problems of this study. Let's just hope few or none put any stock in it when they consider praying.

This definition of prayer may help some.

Value of Mothers and Fathers

I will probably write in more detail about this later, but it's worth noting the recent article in USA Today that covered the fall of birthrates and the implications that will have on the future of the world.

Phillip Longman's book, Empty Cradle, is a fascinating read and very believable. He concludes that, unless secularists are given incentives, the future will belong to what he calls "fundamentalists" who are inspired by their religions to have children. As a liberal, secularist, Longman worries about this.

I find the implications fascinating. While intellectuals have been busy trying to solve various problems of the world, they have forgotten our basic work, to repopulate the earth. I have strong religious beliefs regarding this, but the economic and social issues are also very interesting. Europe has made a long-term blunder and its countries are in danger of losing their national identity, or will soon be in danger of it.

What is most encouraging about Longman's book is the need he expresses to give more credit to the value of parents and particularly mothers. It's clear from his conclusions that motherhood has been way undervalued. Hopefully that will be recognized in the future. Empty Cradle, is a fascinating read and very believable. He also encouraged the Iraqi insurgency to continue fighting. Like sheep, the media played into his hand and Saddam's message was sent repeatedly worldwide. Saddam does not need a public relations firm, the media basically do his work. The insurgency is no doubt encouraged and boistered by Saddam's message.

The media are skilled when interviewing public figures, to sort through the talking points and sound bites and ignore the spin and rhetoric. When they do run with talking points, they analyze them, downplay them, or explain the motivation behind them. Why can't they do that with dictators?

Of course the media has a responsibility to tell the story, but, as I've said before, they should have the greater good in mind and as their primary concern. Perhaps the people in India realize the importance of having the U.S. as a friend, whereas the Pakistanis are still reeling from the cartoon controversy.

This article shows a picture of Pakistanis burning a U.S. flag. Many (if not all) of these protestors are likely the same people who are outraged by cartoon depictions of their prophet. I realize to Muslims depictions of Muhammed are very disrespectful and more offensive than the burning of a flag, but can't they see that burning a U.S. flag is very disrespectful to us?

Differences will always exist among people on Earth, but we can still coexist if we just have respect for each other. It asks the question "are blogs dying." Anyone who truly understands the significance of what is happening can see the editors simply don't get it or they are hoping this trend, that is so irritating to their business will some how go away.

But they are focusing too much on the form and not enough on the function. Blogs will evolve and change, but hoping people will stop using this technology is about as useful as the Catholic Church hoping the reformers would simply stop using the printing press. (In his book, Blog, Hugh Hewitt compares blogs to the Reformation). The form may change, but now every person has access to their own printing press and the media's monopoly on information is being eroded.

I think it's very exciting to see what's happening. It is chaos at times, but the exciting part is the ability to share information. We can now read the thoughts of the brightest minds around the country and world. We can read analysis of current events written by true experts, unfiltered by gatekeepers. A new breed of reporters will be born, as this excerpt from Glenn Reynolds new book explains. Those who understand this see right through the Chicago Tribune editorial and others who think this is just a passing fad. That's not to say that blogging will continue at its current pace, but the basic concept will not go away.

There is another interesting thing about the Tribune editorial. Blogs will not replace the news side of the media, but they might just seriously impact the editorial side of newspapers. David Weinberger of the Harvard Berkman Center has talked about this. Why do we need to read the opinions of some editors at a newspaper on a certain subject when instead we can read the opinions of true experts? That's not to say editors aren't smart people, they're just not experts in everything and so we get editorials like this. So the Chicago Tribune editorial page has good reason to predict the death of blogs blogs; its very relevance is at stake.

Farewell to a Truly Great Entertainer

Don Knotts passed away on Saturday, and we lost one of the greatest comedians of all time. I would guess that few if any taggers are property owners and if so they have no idea what it's like to take pride in property.

Sadly there are people who make a living off of supplying these anti-socialites with their tools and hip hop music and other pop culture encourages it.

Mayor Rudy Giuliani wisely made graffiti clean up a priority of his administration. He said
"Graffiti creates an impression of disorder and of lawlessness. A city tainted by vandalism invites more vandalism and more serious crime because it sends the message that the city doesn't care and isn't paying attention."

That's precisely why I take even a little graffiti in a neighborhood seriously. It has to be nipped in the bud before the gang bangers and ding bats think they rule the neighborhood. Most cities will clean it up quicly if you call the proper authorities. And if they don't you should start and clean up committee of your own.

Old Shed

Will They Live Happily Ever After?

The Nebraska lottery winner has been found, and there are eight of them. The eight bought a ticket together and will each get $15.5 million after taxes. The governor showed up to present them with their checks and it was painted as if they will all now live happily ever after. A few of the quotes are telling.

One man said his three-month-old daughter "is going to be happy for the rest of her life." I hope she is, but if that happens, it won't be because of the money. This is what lawmakers who are proponents of the lottery want people to believe: if you win, all your troubles will go away. For those who have never learned to manage their wants, their troubles are only beginning.

Three of the winners are immigrants. Nothing like living out the American dream.

I hope they all use their money wisely, but the very fact that they were playing the lottery shows they may have some troubles with money management and expectations. While money from the lottery may fund some of our current programs, it is taking money from those who could be depositing it in retirement accounts to take care of their future needs. We will certainly pay for that later. It would be interesting to see a study on how much lottery players spend on tickets and what that money could do for their retirement fund. If their $117 million payout were invested in the stock market at an annual 10% return for 25 years, it would be worth $1.2 billion dollars. Imagine how many retirements that could fund. But instead of focusing on the well being of society and created a society where hard honest work is valued, we make a few filthy rich and worry and the rest later. This is about all of us and the future good of our society.

The most troubling aspect of this story is not the winners (who seem like a good group of people), but the expectations their winning is putting into the minds of millions of other Americans who now think they have a good chance of winning the lottery.

How Will China Use the Internet?

Clay Bennett's cartoon in the CS Monitor today was a classic. Someone in Nebraska has won $365 million dollars and they don't even know it.

This is plain craziness. Anyone who has the slightest knowledge about statistics and probability and an understanding of the target group of the lottery knows this is nothing more than a regressive tax. When you stop to think about this, it's really the government trying to deceive us (those who are foolish enough to be deceived) into paying more taxes. The argument is that it brings revenue for schools and such, but at what cost?

Shouldn't our focus be on economic development and productivity and not on tricking entire states into thinking everyone is likely to get filthy rich quickly by playing the lottery. It's unhealthy for us to lose the foundations of the American dream, which is that you can succeed if you work hard enough. That's being replaced by the idea that success comes only if your lucky (or corrupt) enough.

The irony of all this is the problems a landslide of money brings to the lives of the winners. Let's replace the "get rich quick" dream with the American dream."

What is the Time Value of Knowledge?

The foundation principle of finance is the time value of money. Simply stated, money today is worth more than money in the future. Once you understand that principle, you can begin to understand how to maximize your profits and eventually grow wealthy.

The same principle must apply to knowledge. Knowledge gained today is worth more than knowledge gained in the future. Just has money gains interest that is continually compounded, knowledge also compounds at a rapid rate.

This is a principle I have pondered for some time, but consumer-generated media adds a whole new dimension and this principle may give us some indication of the reason why blogs are so popular. Knowing something early is usually better (unless "we can't handle the truth.") Now information travels at a break neck pace. So what does that say about how new media will affect our economy. I think it will bring greater prosperity as well as obviously bringing more progress.

It would be interesting for someone to try to quantity just exactly what the time value of knowledge is.

I blogged about this on another blog over a year ago (in fact I created it specifically to record and stake my claim to this concept) and at the time I did a Google search to see if this concept had appeared anywhere else on the Web. I found several academic references to it, but since then, this software consulting site has popped up and is also using the concept.

Gregory and the Shooting Story

NBC's David Gregory is facing some criticism over remarks he made to Scott McClellan at the shooting press conference. What can you say when the person most effected by this event was full of forgiveness and compassion when the rest of the country wasn't?

What's Really Happening In Iraq?

Power Line has a great story about a conversation with a flight attendant from Birmingham England who's airline transports many of the U.S. soldiers. Is the press really getting the story right in Iraq or are they so intent on making the Bush administration look bad that they are doing a disservice to the Iraqi people?

Hopefully history gets it right if the press doesn't. The military should encourage all of its soldiers to blog about the day to day progress and success they see in Iraq. There's a sense the media is nearly rejoicing in news. You only have to listen to the White House briefing to get a sense of their frenzy.

Both the NY Times and the Washington Post editorialize about it today, as if there was no other news to cover. And of course the comedy shows had a heyday. This was an accident and no doubt one Cheney feels terrible about. Some of those who are rejoicing in his misfortune may one day gain someday feel some empathy when they have similar misfortunes (although unlikely related to hunting). Can't our society show some class?

"Strange Incident?" Yes in the Media's Coverage of It

Vice President Cheney had the extreme misfortune of accidentally shooting his hunting companion with a 28-guage shotgun while quail hunting. Anyone who has hunting extensively (me included) understands that while extremely rare, these accidents can happen.

What is unfortunate is how the news media is blowing this up into some kind of national crisis. Elizabeth Vargas used the words "strange incident" to describe the accident and then she quizes Stepanopolous in an obviously pre-staged interview about whether the public has a "right to know" these things more urgently. Give me a break. Is it the administration's duty to run to the press to inform them of something that has nothing to do with the rest of the country. The ABC headline say "Why So Secret?" Uh, duh. Think about it for a minute. Cheney obviously feels terrible about this and it has no implications on the nation so why make in public? "Why So Secret" implies that there is something else behind this, some conspiracy the vice president is involved in. The ABC story showed reporters grilling the president's spokesman at a briefing.

This incident shows how out of touch the media is. They're purpose is to boost ratings, period. Can they not find news that really has an impact on the country?

Perhaps all the buzz surrounding this story is caused by the public's lack of experience with hunting and firearms. They forget that most of us operate machines much more dangerous than guns every day. We call them cars.

Winter Morning

Internet Trends

PEW has recently completed some interesting studies on how people are using the Internet. It's always great to see all of the nations participating marching in the opening ceremonies. For a small moment, the world comes together. It was strange tonight, however, to see the Iranian team marching. Of course the fact that country is becoming a pariah is not the athletes fault, but as they marched they did seem like the naughty little brother at the dinner table, almost unwelcome at an the event. It makes you wonder what will transpire before the China games in 2008 and if they will be marching then.

Oscars, Grammys and the Like

It's the season when we celebrate the "greatest" works of "art" by our celebrities and stars and those who make them so. I don't think I've ever sat through an entire Oscars or Grammys award program. Some of the artists truly deserve the honor or these awards, but many do not.

This year's Oscars show just how out-of-touch Hollywood is with the rest of America. As I mentioned, there's no doubt there are some good things being produced out there, but we could do so much better. I hope some talented movie and television producers rise to the top and give us something worth looking at. Some of that is out there now, but I hope it because the benchmark for others to follow and that the economy of wholesome wants will drive our media viewing habits in the right direction.

Iran Referred to Security Council

Iran has been referred to the U.N. Security council and now will not allow inspections and will likely begin enriching Uranium. This is very unsettling for a country that denies the holocause happened and has stating its goal is to wipe Israel off the map. This has and will likely continue to wake up many Europeans to their dangerous neighbors. It may improve public opinion of the U.S. when European countries call on us for help.

I don't see a peaceful resolution to this. The current leadership of Iran seems quite wacko and unopen to dialouge. It's becoming a major resource for stalkers and worse.

The Internet is taking us to a society where everything is open and transparent. That can be good and it can be very bad. Take Wikipedia for example. Even those who are semi-famous (and in the future perhaps those who are not famous at all) have an entry about them on Wikipedia. If that person has been involved in even one minor scandal, or what someone thinks is a scandal, then that incident appears on that page and there is nothing the person can do to remove it.

No one's reputation is safe anyone. It makes you wonder if laws will be passed in the future that will enable people to seek action against others who post untrue or slanted information about them on the Internet without their consent. Of course will have libel and slander laws, but those were enacted for a paper society with the burden of proof on those who are defamed in order to protect free speech. In an electronic society, that burden may need to shift.

Media Fixated With the Iraq Newspaper Story

There was another story tonight on CBS News about the military paying for news coverage in Iraq. The reporter, whose name I don't remember, acted the questioning father role as he questioned a dignified officer about whether this amounted to "planting" stories. As I've written before, this is just a case of the media giving undue weight to an issue that is close to them. It shows they gravitate towards the issues they understand most and treat them with too much coverage.

On the same broadcast, ironically, CBS News ran a report about how the media is changing. They quoted stats from a NY Times/CBS poll in a way that made them sound positive. They even seemed to believe that the fact two out of three people said the media are accurate was a good thing. Can you imagine any other profession that got things right only two out of three times?

Then Helen Thomas was interviewed and said a "problem" is everyone who has a computer thinks they're a journalist. I'm not so sure that is a bad thing. At least now those who know something about something besides journalism can have a voice and help us analyze and understand the events of the world. Perhaps Ms. Thomas was saying it was a bad thing for the profession. That may be true, but whether it's bad for the public is yet to be seen. It's quite strange how journalists love free speech only when it serves them well.

We have great journalists out there, but they do not have a monopoly on telling stories. Putting a printing press into the hands of millions of intelligent people who have specific knowledge about topics of expertise much deeper than journalists is not a "problem," as Helen Thomas describes it.

Qwest: Corruption at the Top

The former Qwest CEO has been indicted on 42 counts of insider trading. This story is interesting to me because I was ripped off by Qwest during the time this guy was at the wheel. I should start by saying I hope and think Qwest has cleaned up its act. However, a few years ago they called me to "offer" me three free trial months of one of their products (I was an existing customer at the time). However, after the first month, the bill for the service came. After waiting 45 minutes to get to customer service, they told me they would take the charge off the next bill. However, the next bill did not deduct the charge and in fact had an additional charge for the service. After a few more 45-minute calls and similar responses, I just gave up, which was exactly what they wanted me to do. I filed a complaint with the BBB, but never heard back.

This isn't the first time Qwest has been in the hot seat. See here and here. My point here is not to criticize a company that treated me badly, but to point out that corrupt leadership at the top trickles throughout an organization.

By the way, I now use Verizon wireless and do not have a landline (to avoid using Qwest). Verizon's customer service is unbelievably good.

Do we really still need unions?

Today NYC transit workers struck and millions of New Yorkers had to walk. An estimated $400 to $600 million dollars were lost and $1.5 billion could be lost this week if the transit strike continues. No doubt some needing medical attention died because of the traffic. And the city is in controlled chaos. The economic impact will affect millions of people. The stikers mantra is "we move NY, respect us." Okay, but you're not the only group that provides critical functions and no one is forcing you to work for the MTA. What if all medical workers suddenly struck? And what does the labor union want? Higher pay, lower health care costs and according to one source, retirement at 55. Wow. Wouldn't we all like that.

Perhaps someone can convince me otherwise, but I have heard few good things that come from unions. I understand their original purpose and I understand there's a need to keep big business in check, but the costs on society seem to outweigh the benefits. I chuckle everytime I see a local union sign saying "shame on (this or that business)" that they display in front of the business because it hasn't used union labor. I don't think there' s more hypocritical word some unions could use than "shame."

Now perhaps I'm completely wrong and there is a purpose and need for unions, but I have heard too many stories for companies who have to hire additional employees for a job, not because the job requires it, but because the union requires it. Then those union workers often end up just sitting around. There's got to be a better way. Perhaps this incident will be a catalyst to encourage our lawmakers to take another look the problems caused by unions. Keep in mind there are states where unions are weak, unemployment is low and the economy thrives.

The Men of the Future

I am very troubled by the proliferation of pornography these days and the impending societal problems it is sure to inflict upon us. Even if every last bit of pornography were destroyed today, I think that which has already been consumed is enough to significantly weaken the strength of society. The weakness comes to those men who choose to indulge in it.

In the future, there will be two kind of men: Those who indulge in this smut and those who do not. Those who do not will be at a great advantage. Think of the advantage a person who does not drink has over an alcoholic. This addiction is similar although I think much more destructive because it destroys the very inner core of the person.

Those who realize this can take heed now and be protected from this destroying influence without having to wait for the studies to appear that prove its destructiveness.

Overeaction to paying for press in Iraq

Nightline was up in arms last night because of news reports (mainly their own) that the U.S. military has been paying Iraqi reporters to write favorable news stories. While this is no doubt unethical, I think it was wrong for Nightline to describe this as another major setback and embarassment for the U.S. military.

The problem is that reporters are extra sensitive when writing about issues that relate to their own profession. Just look at the Judith Miller coverage. Do most of us really care that much about that story? I don't think so. If a reporter in the U.S. was paid to write a favorable story, it would destroy his or her credibility. But we're talking about a war zone in Iraq and were talking about a country that is an emerging democracy, not the U.S. Do you think the press during our revolution was as like it is today? I don't think so.

Reporters seem so anxious to make the U.S. look bad in this war that it is disgusting. That's why some of the best reporting coming out of Iraq is by journalists with no "training."

Bush's latest speech on Iraq

The Washington Post has some interesting analysis of Bush's latest speech. Bush is sticking with his guns, literally and figuratively. The Democrats are calling for a concise strategy. I'm convinced that this problem will cause immense, even catostrophic harm in America. Pres. Bush recently warned of the dangers of the bird flu and committed billions to fighting it. However, pornography will cause much more damage to America than this bird flu would, yet we are doing little as a country to fight it. As groups come forward to fight this, we will hear people will mock them saying we have much greater problems in the country to deal with. Those problems are much more visible so they will get the most attention. Hopefully lawmakers will be brave enough to come forward and fight this. Bird flus, wars, hurricanes and economic problems may slow the economic progress of the nation, but pornograpny will (and is) destroy our soul, both as individuals and as a nation. As you destroy the inner strength of people and destroy their ability to care for and love others and create and nuture loving families, you destroy an entire nation.

Hurricane ravaged towns can be rebuilt in months or years, wars end, and pandemics pass, but when you destroy the inner strength and goodness of people, the consequences last for generations.

Aversion to Punishment

Our current society seems to have an aversion to punishment. I agree that we need to forgive and forget and allow others to move on, and forgiveness is one of the things that can help change the world immensely. However, there are times when consequences need to be metting out. That happened this last week when the Philadelphia Eagles suspended Terrell Owens after giving him chance after chance to improve his conduct.

Now, Jesse Jackson, is calling for the Eagles to rescind the suspension saying he talked to T.O. and believes he is sincere. It's quite easy to be sincere when finally you see that you have brought upon yourself great harm because of your actions. I'm not talking about one or two mistakes made because of bad judgement, but repeated offenses with blatant disregard for their affect on others or the organization you represent.

I hope Terrell Owens can turn his life around, but I support the Eagles in their decision. This is not some poor working-class man who now will struggle to make ends meet because he lost his job. We're talking about a guy who has made more money than any one individual needs, but just wanted more and more without regard to the impact of his complaining and behavior on others. He'll be all right and most likely a better person when his year of probation is completed. It will also teach young athletes that class is an important part of being an athlete.

Have you seen Mars lately?

I asked this question of a friend lately and because of the randomness of the circumstances in which I asked it, he just laughed. So who is to blame? Or the better question is "who contributed to the problem?" I don't know all the ins and outs on the issue, but I was thinking more about this today and came to the (perhaps obvious) conclusion that it is the parents of these rioters who contributed through either their comission or omission or both. Why have they not taught their children that another country was welcoming enough to give them a shot at a better life? Why haven't they taught them to respect the land that welcomed them?

Of course there may be policy issues that are not as favorable as they could be to immigrants, but that does not give you license to destroy the land that gave you a chance at a better life. It's time for people to take some personal responsibility. Look at groups in America and other countries in history who were persecuted underpriviledged. Did they destroy their country? No, they went to work and made it better. Blaming other people for our problems gets us no where. These people have got to except responsibility for their futures and not rely on some government to ensure they have a good life.

Related to this incident; do you think authorities in America would let these kinds of riots go on for so long? I don't think so. Look at what happened in New Orleans. After a few days of looting, a shoot-to-kill order was given. The looting suddenly subsided. When order is at risk an anarchy rules, that is a time when the government needs to step up and provide order.

Paris riots

Although admittedly I do not know a lot about the situation, the Paris riots are a shameful display of anti-social behavior. It's yet another example of people blaming others for their own situation. This is particularly troubling because this group of people chose (or their parents chose) to immigrant to Europe, supposedly in search of a better life. And when they do not find what they perceive as a better life what do they do? They try to wreck the very country that gave their parents the opportunity for that new life. Like I say, I may not have all of the facts but to me it seems like gross ingratitude.

The Former FEMA chief

When I first heard the criticism of the FEMA chief as Katrina unfolded, I thought perhaps the media was being too hard on him and not realizing the magnitude of the disaster he was dealing with. However, after reading the emails that were sent by his office during the crisis, I'm not as forgiving. There's no doubt he was under an incredible amount of pressure, but the lack of hard work and effort in responding is troubling. I think you still have to give him some benefit of the doubt. Everyone who uses emails knows that flippant emails are sent, even during crisis situations, but it's still troubling to think that everything possible was not done quickly to respond to the disaster.

In a way I feel bad for Michael Brown though. Perhaps he was placed in a position he was not prepared to fill. I hope things still work out for the best for he and his family. It will be tough to recover from the bad publicity.

Time to quit the habit

ABC News is doing a series on smoking and a campaign to get people to quit. It's quite remarkable how public opinion has shifted to condemn smoking. It's a good thing to improve the health of the people in the nation and reduce health care costs. It's also good because it will reduce the amount of times we have to breath secondhand smoke blown in our faces as we're walking down the sidewalk and watching smokers flick glowing cigarette butts out of their car windows as they drive down the road. The program tried to leave viewers with no doubt that global warming is and will continue to cause major problems for the future of the planet and humankind. One question I was left with, however, was whether there are any positive consequences of a warming globe. There's no doubt global warming will have serious consequences, but the producers seemed to have to stretch to show some of those consequences (others are very evident and worrisome). This no doubt will be a major discussion point for the years to come.

Fall

Times Select

I use to read some of The New York Times columnists, but reading Dowd, Rich and Krugman is like listening to the same song over and over again, at various rates of speed and levels of volume. Now the Times is charging for the great opportunity to read these columnists through a program called Times Select. Let's hope so.

NY Times illustrates it’s cluelessness of life outside

We’ve all seen the map of the U.S. as perceived by a New Yorker. Between the Hudson River and California, there’s nothing but wasteland. The NY Times editorial page gave perhaps the quintessential illustration of that view in an editorial today entitled “The Nuclear Waste Site in Utah.” In the piece, the old gray lady says a site only 50 miles from Salt Lake City would be a good place for a nuclear waste storage facility. “The site seems safe enough” they say. Never mind Utahans are concerned about it because the Times says their concern “seems overblown.” Why Utah? The Times doesn’t give much reasoning except for saying it’s “a very conservative state.”

Do you think such a proposed site in the Northeast would illicit language such as “seems safe enough” or “seems overblown” or refer to President Bush derailing a nuclear storage facility near a major city as doing the people there a “favor.” What NYT is really saying is Utah is a good place for nuclear waste because it's a long way from NY and full of conservatives. Get a clue NY Times. If you want to be the national paper of record, you better start realizing there’s life outside of Manhattan.

Another day

Hurricane Relief

I donated to the Red Cross tonight after watching the coverage of the hurricane's destruction in the Gulf Coast. I figured I needed to do something. We've witnessed some major destruction in the past couple of years with 9/11, the tsunami and now this. Of course there have been worse events in the past, but we have television and the internet that brings it all home. But if you follow the NY Times, you'll notice Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, Bob Bernick and Frank Rich rarely write a column that does not refer to the president of the United States. I stopped reading their columns months ago because they're so predictable and redundant that it's totally unnecessary to follow them.

I have to admit, I did read one of Dowd's recent columns on the president taking extrodinarily long vacations while the nation is in the mist of problems. I have to agree with her on that one. I'm curious as to what these four will write about when Bush is out of office.

Arrogance or Earned Understanding?

A few days ago, Victor Navasky, editor of the liberal magazine The Nation, was interview on The News Hour. Navasky has recently written a book on the importance of opinion. One of his statements during the interview stuck out to me. He said, "you've got to be able to state your opposition's point of view better than he or she states it him or herself."

Is that really possible? That statement implies that you fully understand your opposition's point of view, or position, better than they do. Or course he could be saying you can just articulate their position better than they can, but I don't think that's was he's saying. Navasky's comment assumes that he understands the conservative position better than conservatives do and therefore is in a position to refute it.

One of the problems with this idea is that you cannot fully understand another person's point of view until you've walked in their shoes. You can try to understand it, by finding out all you can about them and imagining what their life is like, but until you've lived by the principles by which they are living, you cannot fully understand them.

On the Way Home

When will Hollywood get the message?

A New York Times story today reported a slump in movie going and how the movie industry is beginning to worry. I think there are few groups in this country (if any) who deserve to be honored than those who put their lives on the line to protect this country and our freedoms. (It's unfortunate that the mayor of Salt Lake, Rocky Anderson, in a strange move for a mayor, organized a protest to Pres. Bush's visit, stealing the much-deserved praise for the veterans and focusing the attention of the media on himself.)

Bush spoke about the importance of seeing the war in Iraq through and defeating terrorism. This war has become incredibly controversial and support for it is grower weeker by the week. It's hard to know how to feel about it becomes the grounds for which we entered it, weapons of mass destruction, proved to be uncredible. However, good has come from it. Millions of people have been liberated from a dictator and we are proving to the world that we will not tolerate terrorism. Shortly after 9/11 one of the terrorists, perhaps Osama, foolishly said that American soldiers were too weak to fight street by street battle. We have proved that that is false. Of course proving your military strength is no grounds for war, but liberating a country is. I admire Bush for his steadfastness in sticking to his policies. If we stick with this, I think it will prove to be a success.

We're heating up

Following a trip to Alaska, Senator's Clinton and McCain raised a strong warning about increasing global warming. It's seems this subject has recently gone from a heated debate to a an undisputed fact that the Earth is warming. The scary thing is that there's a compounding effect to it, which seems to suggest it will get warmer faster. It's hard to predict what the results of this will be. Could there be a bright side to the Earth getting warmer? It doesn't seem like there is, but who knows. It is impossible to predict all of the implications. The more we learn about the Earth, the more fragile it seems. However, it's comforting to know that it has a Creator, although that does not free us from being good stewards.

Once Again

Out with a bang

Hunter Thompson's last wish of having his ashes shot out of a canon will be fulfilled tonight as family and friends look on. I had never heard of Hunter Thompson before his suicide death. His death has received significant media coverage and he's been portrayed as a hero. I don't see it that way though. This is a man who took his life while he was speaking to a family member on the phone. A friend put it into perspective when he contrasted Hunter Thompson with the pope. The pope suffered greatly during his last few years, but up until the last hours of his life, he tried to serve others with what strength he had. Hunter Thompson gave up when it got too hard and took his own life.

Who knows how many years he had left, but it's certain that he could have used his remaining years (perhaps decades) to serve others, regardless of the personal pain he felt, instead of selfishly throwing it away. Our lives are the product of countless people who labor to help us become what we are. In return, we make a contribution to the world. It's not our job to decide when we are finished making our contribution.

Bush's vacation

I'm a supporter of George Bush. I admire his determination to see things through and his ability to ignore criticism and stick with his principles. I also believe the country is well served by having a president who is a God-fearing man. However, I've been troubled lately by the reports of his five-week vacation, which is one of the longest in history for a president of the United States. I understand that being a president is difficult and he needs time to rest, but five weeks just seems too long. I have to admit that I agree with some of the critics on the left (although I'm conservative) that it's frustrating to see the chief executive take so much time off when the country is facing so many problems. We placed our trust in him by giving him our vote and I wish he would work harder to serve us. Sure it's difficult, but one who aspires to that office cannot expect to take the same breaks that would be afforded the chief executive of just another company. The president should waste and wear out his life in service to his countrymen.

Peter Jennings

Today we said goodbye to Peter Jennings, someone who, although we don't know, we've spent many hours with. Longing for the past often keeps us from fully enjoying the present. Anticipating the future can also have the same effect. The cure to both conditions is to learn to savor every moment and know that life will bring many more great moments in the future. If we can learn to appreciate and be grateful to God for the little things in life, we will be better able to fully soak in life's goodness.

Perhaps part of nostalgia comes from knowing we'll never pass this way again in the identical circumstances. We age, people move on, conditions change, etc. That's where the hope of eternal life comes in. There are much greater things in store for us beyond this life. The key is to live this one well to help us better prepare for the next one.

Hiding

The ACLU just slipped

Best of the Web today pointed to an article about the ACLU suing a school district because it expelled a kid who posted threatening song lyrics on the Internet. What was most interesting about this case was that the ACLU said the school district violated the kid's parents rights to control his upbringing. Wow! That will come back to bite the ACLU. While I think parents absolutely have a right to control the upbringing of their children, the ACLU will run into several cases where they are fighting against this very thing.

The ACLU is also suing New York over its subway bags searches, which are intended to prevent terrorism. That's all we need in this very difficult battle against terrorism, the ACLU added additional costs and creating restrictions that impede the fight. They foolishly don't realize that instead of protecting freedom, they are weakening it. We have a right to be protected and to elect government leaders who make decisions to ensure that protection. The ACLU is taking away that right by meddling in more and more issues. I feel less free everytime I hear of a story of ACLU meddling. We would be much better off as a country if the organization did not exist.

Imagine if you're a suicide bomber planning an attack in New York and you hear this news. You think "great!" this will be much easier now. The editorial basically said while we need to start fighting this problem, a tax is not the way to do it. They said the most effective way would be requiring these sites to have their own suffix. This seems to be a viable solution and one that would at least protect those who do not want to see that stuff and child safe.

However, the problem is much broader than that. There needs to be a general awareness and intensive information campaign to warn the public of the dangers of pornography. I fear that the effects of this plague will cause incalcuable problems that are impossible to anticipate. People need to know that their lives (and the lives of some around them) could be ruined by this addiction. I think there are few (perhaps no) problems we are currently facing that are so serious.

Miracle in Toronto!

What great news! CNN is wondering whether "the spacewalk to repair Discovery's protruding tile gap filler is :

Necessary
Too risky"

Of course NASA has a team of the most qualified, educated and experienced experts working on the problem, but perhaps we should make the decision depending on how the public votes. This is another example of a ridiculous "Quick vote" question. How would the general public know if this precedure is "necessary" or "too risky?" We're talking about walking in space which 99.99% of the public know nothing about and an even lower percentage have never done.

What is troublesome here is that the media use of these polls and their coverage can create public opinion that may pressure NASA (and other organizations) unduly. Let the experts do their jobs and stick to what you know.

Terror vs. alcohol

There is no question that we needed an immediate and thorough response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I was living in Manhattan at the time and witnessed some of the results first hand and was glad the president responded by waging war and creating the department of homeland security.

It's interesting though that the response to other preventable causes of death that are not condensed into one act or as dramatic are not viewed as quite important. An editorial in the Christian Science Monitor today discussed how the NCAA must not support alcohol consumption by supporting beer advertisers. The article stated alcohol consumption by college students results in about 1,400 deaths, 500,000 injuries, 600,000 assaults, and 70,000 sexual assaults or date rapes. Now imagine if a terrorist attack caused that much damage. We would immediately respond.

I am by no means saying we should weaken our response to terrorism, I'm just saying there are other preventable causes of harm that need to be addressed by policy makers who have the guts to take on politically charged issues, such as alcohol.

Edge of a cliff

A newly discovered neighbor in the solar system

Astronomers are claiming they have discovered a tenth planet in our solar system. However, there's some controversy over whether this "kuiper" object on the outer edge of the solor system and others like it, including Pluto, should be classified as "planets" since they are so different from the other planets in the solar system. In any case, I think it's fascinating when these new discoveries are made. Our own planet contains so many wonders and amazing sites to see. It's incredible to think that an infinite number of other, perhaps much more amazing planets, lie out there in the universe completely untouched and unexplored by humans (of this earth at least).

Idaho battling illegals

A Wall Street Street Journal article today reported that Canyon county in Idaho is suing companies who hire illegal aliens to recoop costs that come from providing public services to those people. This is a bold step and a good step that strikes at the heart of what is driving the immigration of illegals. We need to lower the incentive companies have to hire these people, which will decrease the opportunity they have to find work illegally. I'm all for legal immigration, but it's not fair for the rest of the population to have to subsidize illegal aliens who live tax free.

A real knight

The Guardian is reporting that former British Prime minister "Sir" John Major (he was recently made a knight) said clerics living in Britain who spew hatred and promote terrorism should be deported. He also said the war in Iraq has not create a new wave of Islamic attacks, but groups were organizing to attack several years ago. He also condemned those who live in England who teach their children to hate the country. John Major is talking about the new reality: that those who promote terrorism cannot expect their rights to be protected when they hate and want to destroy the very country that is giving them those rights.

Celebrities in politics

Congratulations to Lance Armstrong on winning his 7th Tour de France. It's an amazing accomplishment particularly considering he had to overcome cancer to do it. OpinionJournal.com ran an article today discussing the possibility of his political career. Is fame all it takes to be a leader these days? His success in cycling certainly demonstrates he possesses some qualities that might make him a good leader, but the fact that he's popular because of his cycling success does not mean he can lead.

What's really comical about this article though are the quotes by his girlfriend Sheryl Crow concerning war:
"War is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow," she explained. "I think war is never the answer to solving any problems. The best way to solve problems is not to have enemies."
Yeah. O.K. Thanks Sheryl. It was certainly the answer to giving America freedom and the answer to keep Hitler from ruling the world and the answer to giving the Kuwaitis freedom. but you're right, let's just all be friends. That works great in celebrity land, but in the real world it takes wars to keep peace. So stick with what you know best: singing. That brings to mind the question: if it is so great being a celebrity, then why are so many of them looking for second jobs as political activists to find "fulfillment"? Just keep entertaining us and let the wise lead.

Boy Scouts

This is a tragic story of the deaths of four scout leaders at a camp. The Boy Scouts have had some difficult issues to deal with recently (albeit, totally unrelated to this story). Hopefully this organization will be able to continue and keep building boys into good men. It's ironic that in claiming to preserve the rights of the people, the ACLU is taking more rights away, many more, than they are preserving.
